LOCATION
Gamsutl is an ancient mountain village in Dagestan, often called the "Machu Picchu of the Caucasus" for its dramatic cliffside setting. Believed to be over 2,000 years old, it was once a thriving settlement with homes, shops, and even a post office. Built from stone and terraced into the mountainside, the village gradually became abandoned in the late 20th century as residents moved to lower, more accessible areas. Today, Gamsutl' stands as a hauntingly beautiful ruin, offering a glimpse into traditional Dagestani mountain life.
The client envisions revitalizing the area by reimagining the spirit of Gamsutl' living - transforming it into a vibrant cultural and tourist center, while carefully preserving its historical essence and architectural heritage.
CONCEPT
The concept draws inspiration from Dagestan rich culture and native elements that evoke the spirit and atmosphere of Dagestan. At the heart of the main area is the "Ochag" - a traditional fireplace - serving as a central seating feature. Architectural cuts in the walls reference the cliffside dwellings of Gamsutl, while wooden columns are designed as modern reinterpretations of traditional carved forms. The use of carpets further enhances the authentic cultural ambiance.
